Pain Theory | Low Back Pain

Low back pain is a common complaint for many people. It can be caused by a variety of factors. The most common causes include a pulled or strained muscle. It is often hard to determine a cause for most low back pain. Fortunately, most back pain can often be controlled by simple lifestyle changes. Anti-inflammatory medications are also helpful.

A painful sensation in the lower back can be caused by a disorder of or injury to the spine or any of the muscles or nerves in the area. It can also be caused by problems located elsewhere, such as a groin hernia, a reproductive issue, or injury to other parts of the back or neck.

Knowing how to maintain proper posture while sitting or standing is very important in helping to control back pain. When sitting, use a supportive chair with a straight back. With your feet flat on the floor, your knees should rest at a slightly higher level than your pelvis. Sit up straight and if you must turn, use your entire body. While driving, it is very important to sit straight and in a position where you are able to reach all the controls without straining. You may want to place a small pillow behind your lower back for added support.

When standing for long periods of time, it can be helpful to use a small stool to prevent strain on the back. Rest one foot on the stool alternating every 10 minutes or so. Maintain good posture with your head up and hips and shoulders in a straight line.

Some low back pain can be caused by sleeping in an awkward position. The ideal sleeping position is on your side with knees slightly bent. For extra support and comfort, you can use a pillow between your knees and under your head and neck. Sleeping on the stomach is not recommended for those with back pain issues. When sleeping on your back, use a small pillow under your lower back and one under your knees. Using a firm mattress is recommended.

To avoid causing injury to the back, lift heavy objects with the legs and not with the back. Keep the object held close to your body and keep your back straight. Do not twist or turn your body while lifting. When sitting for extended periods of time, make a habit of taking regular short breaks to stretch and move around. Wear only shoes with heels lower than one inch. A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to back problems, as can excessive weight. For this reason exercise is often suggested to control low back pain.
